I am a Sri Lankan architect with a small practice in Colombo. I studied at the City School of Architecture – Colombo, and worked as a junior architect for C.Anjalendran and renowned Sri Lankan Architect Geoffrey Bawa, among others, before starting my own practice in 1997.
I describe my widely differing style as something fundamentally necessary according to time and place ,client and budget ,but always has a contemporary Sri Lankan idiom to it.
If there is any one element that unites all my work it is the constant reference to the outside world , which for me is paramount and I think ,essential in tropical architecture.
At the same time the relevance of sustainable design is foremost in my mind. Preserving all 18 Jak trees in “Amal De mel House” to rainwater harvesting in “Panthera Holiday Bungalow” or using soil from the site as external plaster in”tissamaharama house” I try to incorporate environmentally friendly practices in my design approach which in turn becomes a distinct part of the architecture.
